The proposed December 20th Daniel Jacobs-Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. card on DAZN may not officially exist yet, what with Chavez dodging USADA tests and getting suspended for it, but that hasn’t stopped the relevant parties from adding undercard bouts. ESPN reports that former super lightweight champion Maurice Hooker has an agreement in place to face Pedro Campa in a 144-pound catchweight bout that evening.
Though “Mighty Mo” has said that he intends to campaign at welterweight from now on, claiming that the cut to 140 “impacted” recent performances, promoter Dino Duva suggests that’s not set in stone.
Duva said the bout is contracted at 144 pounds because Hooker “wants to see how he feels in between (junior welterweight and welterweight) and then make a firm commitment” on which division he wants to box in.
Hooker (26-1-3, 17 KO) won and twice defended the WBO super lightweight title before an unsuccessful bid for unification against Jose Ramirez Jr. this past July. His reign saw him upset Terry Flanagan for the belt, get off the canvas to knock out Alex Saucedo, and take a decision over Mikkel LesPierre.
Campa (31-1-1, 21 KO), a 27-year-old out of Sonora, Mexico, has carved out a niche fighting moderate opposition in his home country. In addition to victories over former title challengers Marvin Quintero and Juan Antonio Rodriguez, he’s suffered a TKO loss to journeyman Carlos Jimenez and gone to a draw with Abner Lopez this past April.
We’ll let you all know when, where, and if this thing winds up taking place.
