Teofimo Lopez Sr: Vasiliy Lomachenko has to man up and face us

The trainer discusses his son’s world title win over the weekend.

Following Teofimo Lopez’s world title win over the weekend, his father/trainer took some time to share some of his thoughts with Fight Hub TV, including their chance to knock off pound-for-pound rated Vasiliy Lomachenko next.

Lopez Sr. on how it feels to have accurately predicted his son would win a world title by his 15th fight:

“Listen, he’s just an amazing kid. And I always believed he had it in him to do what he’s doing right now, so it’s not a big surprise to me.”

On if he was surprised that Teofimo knocked out Commey so soon in the fight:

“I had said before the fight that it could be another Mason Menard fight but I wouldn’t give Commey more than five rounds.

“My son is an amazing boxer, you know? And he had a lot to prove and when you put my son in a situation like that, he’s gonna come out of it to be victorious all the time.”

On if the big win might quiet their family tumoil for the holidays:

“Everybody’s doing great, bro. This is like a Christmas gift. And I said it, ‘I’m gonna get an early Christmas gift.’ He gave me a belt so I’m really happy.”

On getting a shot at Vasiliy Lomachenko:

“Well everybody knows that fight is gonna be made. We ain’t going nowhere. 2020, April. We ain’t going nowhere so now he gotta man up and face us.

“I know what I have and when the night comes he’s gonna be victorious again.”

On if this was a breakout fight for Lopez:

“We shut up a lot of people. 100% we shut up a lot of people. And he’s gonna take this victory, he’s gonna go have a great time with his wife, and we’re gonna keep doing this. This is life.”

On people who think he’s just a loudmouth father who talks up his son:

“You know, a lot of people say to me that there was no way I could beat a Rozier corner with all these experienced guys and stuff like that. Listen, what more experience do I need?! I’ve been doing this for 18 years with my son...So what other experience do I need? So I don’t need no experience. I don’t need nothing. I know my fighter, that’s why I only have one fighter.”
