As 2019 comes to a close it’s time to start casting votes for the end of the year awards. The Boxing Writers Association of America has finalized their ballots for this year’s awards, so let’s have a look at some of the notable awards and discuss who’s most deserving.

Nominees for the Fighter of the Year award:

  • Manny Pacquiao — highlighted his 2019 by thoroughly thrashing Adrien Broner in January, followed by an inspired performance against Keith Thurman in July, where he regained another major world title.
  • Canelo Alvarez — outpointed Daniel Jacobs in May, and then went on to make the leap to light heavyweight, capturing the WBO world title by knocking out Sergey Kovalev which earned him a world title in his fourth weight class.
  • Naoya Inoue — started off his year by quickly dismantling Emmanuel Rodriguez and then beating Nonito Donaire in an action-packed thriller to win the World Boxing Super Series’ bantamweight tournament.
