Teofimo Lopez on Vasiliy Lomachenko: ‘I’m gonna knock the f***er out, I don’t like his ass’

Teofimo Lopez sounds as ready as he can be for Vasiliy Lomachenko.

Teofimo Lopez made the folks who offered the prediction that Lopez versus Richard Commey was a coinflip fight feel a bit silly, after he laid the smackdown on the Ghana boxer.

Post-fight, Lopez offered up his typical cherry on top, the backflip. Yeah, he about stole the show, though Terence Crawford succeeded in yanking back the momo, with his takedown of Egidijus Kavaliauskas in the main event at Madison Square Garden on Dec. 7.

We then saw Teofimo, age 22, pose with the Ukrainian technician Vasiliy Lomachenko, present in the building to assess first-hand the skill set of Lopez, now 15-0 (12 KO).

Loma, who owns the WBA and WBO 135 straps, didn’t seem at all burdened by the Lopez arsenal. “We want to ‘unificate’ all four titles,” the 31-year-old boxer, seen by most as No. 1, 2 or 3 pound-for-pound, stated. “Now he’s a world champion and now he’s in position to fight me.”

And on Tuesday afternoon, Lopez indicated that he’s game. April 18 seems like a good date for the unification faceoff, which he hopes would unfold at Madison Square Garden, Lopez told me. Bob Arum and Top Rank will get deeper into specifics (site, money, platform) probably after the holidays, Lopez continued. OK, and the fighting — when Lopez and Loma square off, what is Lopez’ prediction?

”I’m gonna knock the fucker out,” Lopez said with a chuckle. “I don’t like his ass. I don’t fuckin’ like him!”

There is a history; Teofimo’s pop said hi to Loma in the fight card hotel, before the Dec. 8, 2018 MSG tango versus Mason Menard. Senior says Loma blew him off. Expletives were supplied. Feelings linger. Dad seems jazzed to see the son show Loma that he’d be well advised to at least fake cordiality.

Egis Klimas manages Loma, who is trained by his pop. Klimas was informed of Lopez’ prediction for a Lo-Lo bout.

”In boxing most of the guys hate the ones who are better than themselves,” Klimas answered. ”I am sure he now loves Commey. Where is this anger coming from? He should leave some for the ring because he will need it. Oh, and make sure his corner will have the white towel handy, as they may need it.”

My three cents: Lopez versus Lomachenko will be one of the three most anticipated fights of 2020. Who wins, and how?
