The relevant parties have been remarkably mum on Errol Spence Jr.’s status after his high-speed car crash this past October, but the newest bit of news is good. Spence’s trainer, Derrick James, tells The Athletic’s Lance Pugmire that his charge is “back in the gym” just two months after the incident.
The 29-year-old Spence (26-0, 21 KO) had enjoyed a banner 2019, outclassing Mikey Garcia in March before claiming the WBC welterweight title in a brutal Fight of the Year contender with Shawn Porter six months later. “The Truth” was then tasked with defending his belts against Danny Garcia, only to flip his Ferrari at 3:00 AM in a crash he was extraordinarily lucky to walk away from with only limited injuries.
Garcia is currently slated to stay busy against Ivan Redkach on January 25th. Spence, meanwhile, has to deal with a DWI stemming from the accident, though the fact that it was a single-car wreck means that’s the only charge. Hopefully we won’t have to wait too long to see one of boxing’s best fighters back in action.
