The expected March 30 ESPN main event between WBC light heavyweight titleholder Oleksandr Gvozdyk and Doudou Ngumbu was officially announced by Top Rank on Wednesday.
Gvozdyk (16-0, 13 KO) will be making the first defense of the title he won on Dec. 1 from Adonis Stevenson. The 31-year-old Ukrainian, now fighting out of California, ended Stevenson’s long reign with an 11th round knockout.
Ngumbu (38-8, 14 KO) is a 38-year-old veteran from Congo, now living and fighting out of France. He’s been in the sport since 2007, and while a solid fighter, has always been sort of an also-ran, losing to most of the better opponents he’s faced. He’ll be the massive underdog against Gvozdyk.
The co-feature, also expected from earlier reports, will pit WBO welterweight No. 1 contender Egidijus Kavaliauskas (21-0, 17 KO) against hometown Philly fighter Ray Robinson (24-3, 12 KO). With a win, Kavaliauskas would keep himself in line for a shot against Terence Crawford (or Amir Khan, if Khan upsets Crawford on April 20).
Several prospects will be in action on the ESPN+-streamed prelim portion of the card, including welterweight Kudratillo Abdukakhorov (15-0, 9 KO), who will face Keita Obara (20-3-1, 18 KO). That fight is an eliminator for the IBF welterweight title, currently held by Errol Spence Jr.
