The numbers are in. Gervonta Davis’ first headlining fight last weekend, against late replacement Hugo Ruiz, averaged 429,000 viewers on Showtime while peaking at 487,000 according to Nielsen Media Research (via ESPN).
Davis knocked out Ruiz in less than a round, so the main event didn’t really get a chance to pick up any steam with viewership, but it wasn’t exactly the most compelling match-up to begin with — even for a late replacement opponent.
Overall the three-fight telecast, which also featured Mario Barrios stopping Richard Zamora in four, and Javier Fortuna taking a decision over Sharif Bogere, averaged only 311,000 viewers for the premium subscription network.
So the Carson, California show certainly wasn’t a hit in the ratings department, but it also went head-to-head with DAZN’s stream of Machado-Cancio, which may have peeled at least some eyes away from a fight that was mostly a foregone conclusion. But everyone has to start somewhere, and Davis seems to be poised to do much better numbers once he faces a proper opponent.
