Mikaela Mayer outpoints Yareli Larios over 8 rounds

Mayer made some early adjustments and then poured it on Larios in the second half of the fight.

Mikaela Mayer moves on as an undefeated fighter tonight, taking a unanimous decision over Yareli Larios in 8 rounds of action on ESPN. Mayer would win on official scores of 79-73, 78-74, and 80-72, with BLH scoring the fight 79-73 for Mayer as well.

While Mayer entered this fight with at least a 5-inch height advantage, she often fell in with her punches which gave the counterpunching Larios some opportunities to land clean punches she otherwise wouldn’t be able to. But by the third round Mayer’s height and reach advantage seemed to have worn on Larios, who became increasingly sloppy on defense.

As the fight got to the mid-rounds Mayer would continue to land clean punches as the fight wore on, and really nobody would have complained had the fight been waved off before the last round — as Larios was taking a lot of clean punches. Final CompuBox stats had Mayer outlanding Larios 155-81 in total punches.

In the post-fight interview Mayer said she knew heading into the fight that Larios threw wide looping punches and that her longer and straighter punches would be effective. That proved to be precisely the case. With the win Mayer (10-0, 4 KOs) will look to move on to some bigger and better opportunities, but she certainly has some things to work on along the way.
