Junior welterweight prospect Vergil Ortiz Jr will return to action on May 4, when he’ll face an opponent to be named on the Canelo Alvarez vs Daniel Jacobs undercard at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Ortiz (12-0, 12 KO) is considered a top prospect at 140 pounds, and has been terrific in his young pro career, stopping every opponent he’s faced, and that has included some solid wins for his experience level. He put away veteran Roberto Garcia in two rounds last September, and last fought on Jan. 26 in Houston, beating Jesus Valdez in five.
The 20-year-old Ortiz, fighting out of Dallas, still has plenty of rungs to climb on the ladder, but it wouldn’t be too shocking to see him fighting for a world title by 2020, either. 140 is a good division with plenty of strong fighters — Josh Taylor, Regis Prograis, Jose Ramirez, Kiryl Relikh, Ivan Baranchyk, among others — but Ortiz looks like the real deal, too, at least so far.
