As it turns out, Abner Mares’ reason for withdrawing from his bout with Gervonta Davis this upcoming Saturday is a little more serious than expected. The multi-division champ has revealed that he suffered a detached retina in camp, the second of his career.

Mares (31-3-1, 15 KO) initially blamed an elbow injury for his pulling out, but claims that while he does have a bad elbow, it wasn’t the true cause.
The 33-year-old tells Kate Abdo that he intends to continue fighting once he’s healed up, but is okay with retirement if his doctor recommends it. Obviously, I hope he recovers and gets back in the ring, ideally against someone a little smaller than Davis. Even taking into account the war crimes he committed against Joseph Agbeko’s testicles, though, he’s already put together a terrific career and could hang up the gloves with nothing else to prove.
In the meantime, Davis fights another former champion in Hugo Ruiz.
