WBC super featherweight champion Miguel Berchelt, fresh off a three-fight 2018 campaign, has once again injured his right hand, forcing Top Rank to postponed his planned March 23rd rematch with Francisco Vargas. Top Rank VP Carl Moretti tells ESPN that they will “hopefully” rebook it for May.

Dan Rafael mixed up Francisco and Fernando Vargas in the opening paragraph, so I feel better knowing I’m not alone.

This is the third (reported) time that Berchelt (35-1, 31 KO) has damaged that hand; he originally hurt it in his title defense against Takashi Miura, then aggravated it ahead of a scheduled bout with Orlando Salido.

The show, which is booked for The Forum in Inglewood, will continue. There’s a potential heavyweight matchup brewing between Kubrat Pulev and Robert Helenius and the article brings up the possibility of Oscar Valdez making a quick turnaround, though his handlers “informed Top Rank this week that they preferred to have Valdez return a bit later in the year.”
