WBA super featherweight champion Gervonta Davis ended up making weight today for tomorrow night’s title defense against Hugo Ruiz, but it took some doing.
Let me get this out of the way by saying that Hugo Ruiz (39-4, 33 KOs) stepped on the scale first and weighed-in at a comfortable 129.5lbs, which was mostly a foregone conclusion considering he campaigns a division below.
But then the 130lb titlist, who has been stripped of a world title in the past for missing weight, hit the scale again over the limit, coming at 130.4lbs. At that point Davis (20-0, 19 KOs) made a second attempt in his birthday suit, but still weighed-in at 130.2lbs. Davis then had an set amount of time to shed the 0.2lbs and said this about his ability to do so:
“I’ma do it in 30 seconds, a minute, so I’ll be back,” Davis said with a grin.
Davis walked off and the commentating crew took over for a while, but that essentially ended the live stream. So while you can’t see it that video, Davis is said to have weighed-in later, this time at 129.8lbs. That means he will not be stripped of his title on the scale and will continue with this fight as a WBA super featherweight title defense.
