We knew a deal was close, and now WBN is reporting that former middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (38-1-1, 34 KOs) has officially signed a deal with DAZN, with an official announcement to come early next week.
With the signing the obvious expectation is that Golovkin will be set-up for a third fight against Canelo Alvarez, thought to come in September should Canelo beat Daniel Jacobs in May. The early reports suggest Golovkin’s deal includes two fights, with an option to extend up to six fights after that.
This means Golovkin, who hasn’t fought since losing a decision Canelo last September, will take an interim fight which should serve as a tune-up of sorts by May or June. Of course additional details on the specifics of all this should be unveiled in short order.
Really, though, this was an expected and intuitive move for Golovkin since another fight against Canelo still represents the most commercially viable option out there for him. And as a soon-to-be 37 year old fighter, time isn’t exactly on Golovkin’s side.
We’ll keep you posted...
