The postponed rematch between Miguel Berchelt and Francisco Vargas has a new date, as ESPN reports that the fight will take place on May 11, with no location set as of yet.
Berchelt-Vargas II was originally set to headline a Top Rank on ESPN event on March 23, but Berchelt (35-1, 31 KO) injured his right hand during training. The May 11 date is still a Top Rank on ESPN event.
Berchelt, 27, stopped Vargas (25-1-2, 18 KO) in the 11th round of their first meeting on HBO in Jan. 2017, winning the WBC 130-pound belt. Berchelt has made four successful defenses since then, defeating Takashi Miura, Maxwell Awuku, Jonathan Barros, and Mickey Roman, with the latter three all coming in 2018.
Vargas, 34, had won the WBC belt in Nov. 2015 from Miura in a terrific fight, stopping the Japanese champion in the ninth round. He went on to have another war in his first defense against veteran Orlando Salido, with the two going to a draw, and then he lost to Berchelt.
Since that defeat, Vargas has gone 2-0, beating Stephen Smith in Dec. 2017 and Rod Salka in April 2018.
