Those of you who saw Gennady Golovkin’s recent signing with DAZN and assumed he’d be Demetrius Andrade’s next opponent will be disappointed. Eddie Hearn claims he’s “pretty sure” that the winner of this Friday’s bout between Gabriel Rosado and Maciej Sulecki will meet “Boo Boo” on June 22nd in Providence.
Hearn uses a few weasel words, but apparently he’s certain enough to make a press release about it.
Sulecki (27-1, 11 KO) is ranked #6 by the WBO and would be a perfectly reasonable title defense for Andrade, being a proven fighter who did well against Daniel Jacobs last April. Using a win over Rosado (24-11-1, 14 KO) to justify a title shot is a little weak, though; he’s 1-2-1 in his last four and is coming off a split draw against Luis Arias.
I suppose there’s nothing stopping them from putting Andrade-Golovkin together later this year, but it’s still a disappointment.
