The fight will reportedly take place at a 151-pound catchweight.
Soto (69-9-2, 37 KO) was over a decade into his professional career when Vargas (28-2-2, 10 KO) made his debut. “Zorrita” won belts at 126, 130, and 135 pounds, but ran headlong into a mid-massacre Lucas Matthysse during his run at 140. He’s 11-1 since that loss, with notable wins over Juan Carlos Abreu, John Molina Jr., and most recently Brandon Rios.
Vargas, on the other hand, went undefeated at 140 pounds and held the WBO title before moving up to 147, where he’s gone 2-2-2. He’s coming off of consecutive draws with Adrien Broner and Thomas Dulorme and was originally planning to make his super welterweight debut on this card.
Eddie Hearn says Vargas intends to challenge Jaime Munguia later this year.
