A busy weekend of boxing kicks off tonight at 7:00 pm ET, streaming live on DAZN, as Philadelphia native Tevin Farmer returns home to defend his IBF super featherweight title against Ireland’s Jono Carroll in the main event.
Farmer (28-4-1, 6 KO) has emerged over the past couple of years as one of the world’s top fighters at 130 pounds, and has stayed extremely busy since winning the belt over Billy Dib in August of last year. In October, he beat James Tennyson in Boston. In December, he beat Francisco Fonseca in New York. And tonight, he’s home in Philly for his third defense.
Carroll (16-0-1, 3 KO) is a big underdog here. The Dublin native has been barking about this fight since before his Dec. 8 bout with Guillaume Frenois, which ended in a draw. But Carroll has the shot he wanted, anyway, and will look to cash in on the opportunity.
Ireland’s Katie Taylor (12-0, 5 KO) will also be in action, facing Brazil’s Rose Volante (14-0, 8 KO) in a lightweight unification bout. Taylor holds the WBA and IBF titles, while Volante has the WBO belt. If Taylor wins, she hopes to fully unify with Belgium’s Delfine Persoon in June.
A likely shot at the WBO middleweight title is on the line between Philly veteran Gabriel Rosado (24-11-1, 14 KO) and Poland’s Maciej Sulecki (27-1, 11 KO). The winner is expected to face Demetrius Andrade in June, barring any injury setbacks or the like.
British lightweight contender Luke Campbell (19-2, 15 KO) will also stay busy tonight, taking on Mexico’s Adrian Young (26-5-2, 20 KO) in a 10-round bout.
Here’s the rest of the card, set to be televised:
- Daniyar Yeleussinov (5-0, 3 KO) vs Silverio Ortiz (37-23, 18 KO), welterweights, 8 rounds
- Raymond Ford (debut) vs Weusi Johnson (3-10, 0 KO), super featherweights, 4 rounds
These fights are happening off TV, it appears:
- D’Mitrius Ballard (19-0, 12 KO) vs Victor Fonseca (17-9-1, 14 KO), super middleweights, 10 rounds (this is actually a rematch of a 2016 fight where Ballard stopped Fonseca in three)
- Hank Lundy (29-7-1, 14 KO) vs Avery Sparrow (9-1, 3 KO), lightweights, 10 rounds
- John Joe Nevin (11-0, 4 KO) vs Andres Figueroa (9-3, 5 KO), lightweights, 6 rounds
Wil Esco will be on the call tonight.
