Edwards vs Moreno results: Charlie Edwards retains WBC flyweight title with shutout decision

Charlie Edwards made a successful first defense of his WBC flyweight title, shutting out Spain’s Angelo Moreno in what turned out to be a true mismatch today at Copper Box Arena in London.

All three judges had the fight 120-107 for Edwards, which is also what BLH had on our unofficial scorecard.

Moreno (19-3-2, 6 KO) gave as game an effort as he could, but it was nowhere near enough, as he struggled to get much at all done against Edwards (15-1, 6 KO). Moreno’s main plan appeared to be trying to bait Edwards into losing his cool and brawling, but even that backfired, as Edwards simply picked him off with flashy shots, returning the needle.

Moreno was dropped in the eighth round, caught with a right hand shot. The knockdown was really more about Moreno’s balance than anything, as he wasn’t hurt, but it was just another piece of evidence that Edwards was the superior fighter in the ring.

“I’m going to be a multi-weight world champion, mark my words,” Edwards said. “I’m obsessed with this game. I’m obsessed with bettering myself.”

Asked about what was next, Edwards said, “I want to build a legacy. Whoever is next, I’m ready. If that’s Andrew Selby, if it’s Kal Yafai, if it’s one of the other world champions at flyweight, I want to build a legacy.”

“I think it’s about unifying, I really do,” promoter Eddie Hearn said, naming IBF titleholder Moruti Mthalane as a potential opponent this summer. At the moment, Mthalane (37-2, 25 KO) is set to go to Japan on May 13 to defend against Masayuki Kuroda (30-7-3, 16 KO).
