The June 1st Madison Square Garden card headlined by Anthony Joshua vs. Jarrell Miller, which already sports one undercard bout in the form of Kal Yafai vs. Norberto Jimenez, could soon sport another UK vs. USA matchup. ESPN claims that “plans are being finalized” to pit former WBO champion Chris Algieri against Commonwealth champ Tommy Coyle.
Algieri (23-3, 8 KO) came out of nowhere to upset Ruslan Provodnikov in 2014, which had the unfortunate side effect of making him a “name.” He went 1-3 in his next four, falling to Manny Pacquiao and Amir Khan before a thrashing from Errol Spence Jr. led him to retire. He’s 2-0 since coming out of retirement last November.
Coyle (25-4, 14 KO) suffered a TKO loss to Luke Campbell in 2015, but has since won four of five, warring with Tyrone Nurse in the sole loss and defeating Sean Dodd for the aforementioned Commonwealth belt.
Not exactly a pivotal matchup, but both men are always good for a scrap.
