Deontay Wilder slated for May 18 return

WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder may not have secured a rematch against Tyson Fury as he wanted, but the titleholder is expected to keep the same date for his anticipated return — a May 18th fight at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn per a RingTV report.

Dominic Breazeale is still thought to be the leading candidate to get the fight with Wilder as he’s held the mandatory challenger position for some time now — and he and Wilder have a bit of a personal grudge following an altercation at a hotel a while back.

“I don’t care about Dominic Breazeale at all, I don’t feel he bring anything to the table but another body I can lay out on the canvas; another knockout for the highlight reel; another viral video for the internet,” Wilder told The Ring earlier this month. “That’s all he is to me.”

As this time all involved parties are presumably awaiting an official ruling by the WBC though, as they’ve previously ordered Breazeale to take on Dillian Whyte next, albeit before it became clear that Wilder-Fury II wouldn’t be happening anytime soon.
