Fuzhou, Jiangxi will host a pair of WBA title bouts on May 26th when featherweight champ Can Xu and light flyweight champ Carlos Canizales defend their respective titles against former titlists Shun Kubo and Sho Kimura.
Xu (16-2-2, 2 KO) outslugged Jesus Rojas for the belt in January to become China’s youngest-ever (and only current) champion. Canizales (21-0-1, 17 KO), meanwhile, denied Xu’s countryman a bid at the same honor last July, knocking out amateur standout Lu Bin in the first defense of the belt he defeated Reiya Konishi to earn.
Both Kubo (13-1, 9 KO) and Kimura (18-2-2, 11 KO) are making their first bids at gold in new weight classes. Kubo lost his WBA super bantamweight title, which he’d won from Nehomar Cermeno, to Daniel Roman in his first defense, but successfully upset former title challenger and WBA #1 contender Hiroshige Osawa at featherweight last April. Kimura will be returning to 108 pounds for the first time since 2016, having knocked out Zou Shiming for the WBO title and engaged in a Fight of the Year with Kosei Tanaka during his time at 112.
