Brandon Figueroa makes Yonfrez Parejo quit in eight

The first main card fight of tonight’s PBC tripleheader was fun while it lasted, but Brandon Figueroa’s pace proved too much for Yonfrez Parejo to handle.

Parejo (22-4-1, 11 KO) started strong in a fight that primarily took place forehead-to-forehead, answering Figueroa’s (19-0, 14 KO) volume and pressure with nasty counters to the head and body. He racked up some early damage to Figueroa’s left eye with his straight right, but as the rounds went by, Parejo’s punches started to lose steam. His offense became limited to brief bursts, generally at the end of the round, and Figueroa simply refused to slow down.

After the bell rang in the eighth, Parejo answered “no” when the referee asked if he wanted to continue, citing a pair of brutal body shots. Figueroa ultimately threw 845 punches in eight rounds, more than twice what Parejo unleashed.

Figueroa is now the interim WBA super bantamweight champion, despite Daniel Roman fighting next Friday and Murodjon Akhmadaliev being next in line. WBA gonna WBA.
