Gennady Golovkin wants a definitive conclusion to rivalry with Canelo Alvarez

Gennady Golovkin faces Steve Rolls on June 8, but much of the talk is still about a third fight with Canelo Alvarez.

Former middleweight titleholder Gennady Golovkin will make his DAZN debut on June 8, facing little-known Steve Rolls in a 164-pound catchweight bout at Madison Square Garden.

Golovkin (38-1-1, 34 KO) talks the matchup with Rolls, a potential third fight with Canelo Alvarez later this year, and returning to New York.

On returning to New York to fight

“It’s very nice to come back to New York. I have all the best memories and associations with New York, and the attitude towards and treatment of boxing in New York is very different.”

On what he thinks of Steve Rolls as an opponent

“I know he’s a dangerous guy. ... Right now he has the biggest fight, the biggest chance. He’s undefeated. He’s from Kronk, Emanuel Steward’s gym. Respect. He had good experience with champions, big names, sparring with those guys. I do not believe this is an easy fight.”

On whether he’s seen tape of Rolls

“No. Once I start my sparring, I’ll watch his video.”

On if he worries about not knowing much about Rolls

“I don’t think about his style, I don’t think, ‘Who is this guy?’ I just need my style.”

On getting older and training

“I feel good. It has changed a little bit, yes. I’m being smarter. Not a lot. Maybe one percent.”

On a third fight with Canelo in September after Rolls

“It’s important for everybody. For DAZN, for the people, for me, for him. Probably. I hope so.”

On Canelo saying GGG needs a belt to fight him again

He said it. He’s not the promoter. He’s not a partner to DAZN. He’s a fighter. I remember my situation — he had nothing, I had all the belts, why not? ... Not because I gave him a chance, just it’s not correct, ‘If I don’t have a belt he doesn’t want to fight me.’”

On wanting a definitive conclusion to his rivalry with Canelo

“I think we’re going to have that fight. It will be different and it will be a more definitive result — and it will be honest.”

On fighting Steve Rolls at 164 pounds

“I feel very comfortable at 160, but this guy fights at 168. We’re going to meet in the middle.”

On having too much power for people to want to fight him

“It’s not my fault. Thanks, my parents.”

On Canelo saying he wants to fight Sergey Kovalev

“If he wants to, why not? I think Kovalev is ready for that fight and if Canelo is ready for Kovalev, why not?”
