Errol Spence explains why Terence Crawford fight won’t be next

Spence says he has easier-to-make title fights right in front of him.

Wil Esco is an assistant editor of Bad Left Hook and has been covering boxing for SB Nation since 2014.

With the entire fight world clamoring for a showdown between welterweight titleholders Errol Spence and Terence Crawford, Spence takes a moment to explain why that fight won’t be happening next, although he does say he thinks it’ll happen eventually. Check out some excerpts below...

Spence on saying Bob Arum isn’t promoting Terence Crawford properly:

“He’s not. Nah, he not promoting him well because throughout the whole promotion of the fight — and ya’ll keep it 100 — was they not saying Lomachenko’s name every time they say Terence Crawford’s name? Even after the [Khan] fight they kept saying Lomachenko, comparing Terence Crawford [to] Lomachenko...why are you even mentioning his name when you got Terence Crawford fighting on PPV?”

On if he thinks Top Rank is intentionally linking Crawford to Lomacheko:

“I mean, I don’t know if it’s intentional. I mean, it could be intentional but it could be subconscious...I think they was forced to really promote Terence Crawford ‘cause he kept winning.”

On if he thinks Crawford is comfortable with his Top Rank situation:

“Terence Crawford a fighter, man. I respect Terence Crawford. I got his number, he got my number. I respect him, I like him a lot, I feel like he’s a real fighter, a good guy, things like that, but it’s a business side too. I think he kinda capped his ceiling signing a deal [with Top Rank/ESPN]...

On if the fight will ever happen:

“Its gonna happen. It’s definitely gonna happen. But like I said, I’ve got other people in front of me. You know, I got [Shawn] Porter, I got [Keith] Thurman. So I gotta choose.

“I got people talkin’ about ‘oh, you ducking Terence Crawford.’ It’s not that I’m ducking him, I got somebody in front of me that a fight can be easier made in a day, you know what I’m saying? So I can easily take that fight.

“Bob Arum say he wanna make a fight with me and Terence Crawford but at the end of the day we’re still human. So you on TV, you bashing somebody and this and that, what makes you think somebody wants to talk to you, or do business with you when you bash them?....

“Like I said, it really showed that they’re real desperate but I’m not worried about that, I’m worried about getting belts. Like I said, it’s strap season so I’ma knock Shawn Porter out, and then if Keith Thurman and Pacquiao fight then I’m gonna get the winner of that and I’ma knock them out too. Then we won’t be talking about no 50/50 split [with Crawford].”
