Having claimed a world title in his second weight class this past weekend with a decision over Srisaket Sor Rungvisai, Juan Francisco Estrada is already laying out a roadmap for his super flyweight title reign. According to manager Fernando Beltrán, “Gallo” intends to make his first defense “in July or August in Mexico City.”
Estrada (39-3, 26 KO) hasn’t actually fought in his home country since 2017; his last five fights have all taken place in either Inglewood or Carson.
The complicating factor here is his hands; he apparently damaged them early in the Sor Rungvisai rematch, which could have paved the way for the Thai slugger’s late surge. No details yet as to the specificity of the injury.
I would imagine that Sor Rungvisai will take a get-well fight before jumping back into the deep end, but if he does intend to face a top challenger, he’s got no shortage of options. Chocolatito Gonzalez is his highest-ranked unoccupied contender at the moment, followed by Andrew Moloney, Donnie Nietes, and Francisco Rodriguez, Jr.
