Scott Quigg has been on the poster for the April 26th DAZN show headlined by Srisaket Sor Rungvisai’s rematch with Juan Francisco Estrada since the beginning, but he’s just now received an opponent: Puerto Rican veteran Jayson Velez.
There were rumblings about him facing former featherweight champ JoJo Diaz Jr., but that didn’t come together.
Velez (28-5-1, 20 KO) fought then-featherweight-champion Evgeny Gradovich to a draw in 2014, then immediately hit a wall. After dropping a decision to Ronny Rios on the Canelo-Cotto undercard, he lost his next three fights to Diaz, Rene Alvarado, and Alfredo Santiago. He’s since won five of six, falling to Ryan Garcia among knockout wins over faded veterans Juanma Lopez, Orlando Cruz, and Victor Terrazas.
Quigg (35-2-2, 26 KO) missed the featherweight limit by 2.5 pounds before a grueling battle with Oscar Valdez last year, prompting him to make the move to super featherweight. He’s coming off of a knockout win over the horribly overmatched Mario Briones in October.
