WBA super featherweight titleholder Gervonta Davis was recently ordered to face mandatory challenger Ricardo Nunez, and we also already knew that Davis was set to return July 27 in a homecoming fight from Baltimore on Showtime.
Connect the dots, and you can guess where we’re going. Mike Coppinger says there will be no surprises, as Davis will face Nunez on July 27.
Davis (21-0, 20 KO) is one of the top fighters in the world at 130 pounds. Nunez (21-2, 19 KO) is not. The 25-year-old Nunez, from Panama, is ranked No. 30 in the world by BoxRec, and has about as empty a record as you’re going to find. He’s a ridiculous mandatory challenger.
Davis, 24, proved his quality in early 2017 with a stoppage win over Jose Pedraza, and since then it’s been a mixed affair. He trounced Liam Walsh, then missed weight for a fight with Francisco Fonseca, which went ahead and went Davis’ way. In April 2018, he trounced Jesus Cuellar in three rounds, and in February, returned with a TKO-1 win over Hugo Ruiz, a late replacement for injured Abner Mares.
