Today at Ulster Hall in Belfast streaming live on ESPN+ at 3:00 pm ET, former bantamweight titleholder Ryan Burnett makes his return to action in the main event against Jelbirt Gomera.
We’ll be here with live results and discussion for the full card.
Burnett (19-1, 9 KO) broke out big in 2017, beating Lee Haskins for the IBF bantamweight title and then unifying with the WBA belt by defeating Zhanat Zhakiyanov. After a defense against Yonfrez Parejo in March 2018, he entered the World Boxing Super Series.
But last November in Glasgow while facing Nonito Donaire in the opening round of the tournament, Burnett suffered a back injury, had to retire from the fight, and left the ring on a stretcher. Today, he makes his return, this fight a 10-rounder at super bantamweight.
Gomera (14-5, 7 KO) is a pretty soft opponent, but that’s fair enough given the situation. The Filipino southpaw is 2-4 in his last six, losing to the likes of Hidenori Otake and Can Xu, but also to fighters who came in with records of 9-5-3 and 11-16-1.
The card will also feature a Belfast vs Dublin co-feature, a 10-round super featherweight bout between Marco McCullough (21-4, 11 KO) and Declan Geraghty (18-3, 4 KO). There’s been a little heat between the two, but professional-type, ready-to-fight heat, not Deontay Wilder heat.
Here’s the full lineup, or maybe not the full lineup but as full as most any of you care about.
