Canelo vs Jacobs weigh-in results: Tempers flare after fighters make weight

The “gentleman” stuff went out the window at the weigh-in.

Scott Christ is the managing editor of Bad Left Hook and has been covering boxing for SB Nation since 2006.

Throughout the entire promotion for Saturday night’s main event on DAZN between Canelo Alvarez and Daniel Jacobs, both fighters have behaved very gentlemanly, and even said that’s how they both prefer to do things, and that they liked that about the other guy.

That all ended at Friday’s weigh-in, as the two went nose-to-nose and then had to be physically separated after tempers flared.

They did make weight, for the record, with Alvarez (51-1-2, 35 KO) at 159½ and Jacobs (35-2, 29 KO) right at the limit of 160. The WBC, WBA, and IBF middleweight titles are on the line.

“Emotions are flying high. I ain’t never backed down from a challenge in my life,” Jacobs said after. “This is the opportunity of a lifetime. I feel like I’m the best middleweight in the world, and that motherfucker right there, he’s gonna get it tomorrow! Bumpin’ me with that big ass head, it’s time to put on.”

“I see fear, and that was fear,” Alvarez said through a translator, who refused to get into the more colorful part of his statement. “I’m ready for it, and we’re gonna win tomorrow. I hope he tries, but he won’t be able to take my belts. He won’t be capable.”

Here are the rest of the weights for the card and you KNOW we have those big money staredown photos for you.

Remember, tomorrow’s show is running in tiers. Prelims will start at 6 pm ET with two fights streaming on RingTV.com and airing on various regional sports networks, then it switches to DAZN for two more fights at 7:30 pm ET, and then the main card, also on DAZN, starts at 9:00 pm ET with four fights including the main event. We’ll be here with live coverage throughout, and round-by-round updates starting at 9:00 pm ET.

Canelo Alvarez 159½ vs Daniel Jacobs

DAZN

This is the best we could get for a STAREDOWN before the shoving and whatnot started. They didn’t come back for any more photo opportunities after they were separated.

Vergil Ortiz Jr 147 vs Mauricio Herrera 146½

DAZN

Ortiz has stopped everyone, Herrera has never been stopped. Interesting matchup. Ortiz is also fighting at a full welterweight limit for this one, usually he’s closer to 140 and as of Thursday he was still expressing his desire to fight for a world title at 140, calling out WBO titleholder Maurice Hooker in particular. This is the co-feature for the show.

Joseph Diaz Jr 129½ vs Freddy Fonseca 130

DAZN

Plenty of fireworks between these two during the week — they had an issue at the grand arrivals on Tuesday and the undercard presser on Thursday — but everything went normal here. Diaz is looking to get into a world title fight soon, Fonseca is a big underdog with an empty record. This is 12 rounds for the WBA “gold” title, because the WBA didn’t have enough titles yet.

Lamont Roach Jr 129½ vs Jonathan Oquendo 130

DAZN

For a minor title at 130, and will be the opening fight of the main card portion of the DAZN broadcast. Roach is unbeaten, and Oquendo a solid veteran.

Sadam Ali 147 vs Anthony Young 146

DAZN

10 rounds, Ali’s second fight back at welterweight after being wiped out by Jaime Munguia last year. This is a big chance for Young, a major underdog going into the fight. This fight will air on the DAZN prelims, which start at 7:30 pm ET.

John Ryder 167½ vs Bilal Akkawy 167½

DAZN

Set for 12 rounds for the vacant interim WBA super middleweight title. Ryder was originally meant to face David Lemieux in the show’s co-feature, but when Lemieux got hurt he got Akkawy instead, and the fight moved way down the card. This will be part of the DAZN prelim broadcast.

Aram Avagyan 125½ vs Francisco Esparza 126

DAZN

This is a 10-round fight that will air on the RingTV/regional sports network broadcast starting at 6 pm ET. Both are unbeaten, it’s a nice prospect matchup.

Alexis Espino 164 vs Billy Wagner 161½

Either these two didn’t stare at each other or I missed it and I’m not going back to check. Anyway this is a four-round fight and will open the RingTV/regional sports network broadcast.
