Canelo vs Jacobs: Daniel Jacobs over second-day weight limit, will pay penalty but fight is on

Daniel Jacobs didn’t “make weight” this morning, so he’ll pay a penalty and the fight goes on.

OK, earlier we told you that Canelo Alvarez and Daniel Jacobs had done their second-day, Saturday morning weigh-in at 8 am local time in Las Vegas, but that everyone was keeping the weights a secret.

Secret no more! Oscar De La Hoya told ESPN that Jacobs weighed in at 173.6 this morning, 3.6 pounds over the agreed-upon limit of 170 for Saturday morning. That means Jacobs will be paying $250,000 per pound he was overweight, so north of $750K total.

Jacobs is also guaranteed over $10 million for this fight, so maybe he just didn’t really care. Or maybe he did, but I suspect if he did he probably would’ve been closer to 170 than 3.6 pounds over, you know?

So add that on to Canelo’s $35 million payday, I guess. Alvarez weighed 169, for what it’s worth.

All of this ultimately doesn’t matter much to the public, I imagine. The fight is still on, which is what people actually care about. The belts are still on the line, it’s still the fight we’re all here to see this weekend.

We’ll have live coverage starting at 6 pm ET with the prelim bouts, with round-by-round updates for the main card starting at 9 pm ET. If you haven’t done so yet, sign up for DAZN and join in on the fun!
