Canelo vs Jacobs: Canelo Alvarez focused on becoming undisputed middleweight champion

Canelo Alvarez was happy with his win, and now he wants to be undisputed at 160.

Scott Christ is the managing editor of Bad Left Hook and has been covering boxing for SB Nation since 2006.

Canelo Alvarez added another belt to his trophy case on Saturday, taking the IBF title from Daniel Jacobs via decision in the DAZN main event from Las Vegas.

With that win, Alvarez (52-1-2, 35 KO) now has three of the four major titles at middleweight. At his post-fight press conference, he talked about the win over Jacobs and the possibility of fully unifying this year.

On his performance

“I’m very happy, I’m very content, because everything came out the way we worked hard for. We always knew going into the fight that Jacobs was going to be difficult, strong, but that’s what we prepared for, and I’m very happy to add another title to my history. We’re going to continue working and continue winning titles and continue making history.”

On what’s next for him

“The next step would be anything that brings up another challenge. ... My objective is to fight for another title, but the only other champion fights in June. You all know my fights are in September, that might be too close. So we’re gonna think about it as a team and come up with a decision.”

On what he felt was the key to the win

“Everything in general, I’m happy with. We knew he was going to be a difficult fight, complicated. We knew we would also adapt going into the rounds as we timed him, but it’s very hard to do it with Jacobs, landing a combination of four or five punches — you can land one, you can land two, maybe three punches, and then he would be moving and changing. But overall, we’re very happy. We added another title and again, added history.”

On fighting Demetrius Andrade for the undisputed title

“That’s the goal, whoever has the title. It doesn’t matter. Our goal is to unify all the belts, become the undisputed middleweight champion of the world. We’re gonna sit with our team and we’ll come back with a decision.”
