Gennadiy Golovkin: Canelo vs Jacobs was ‘boring’ and ‘like a sparring match’

GGG wasn’t very impressed with what he saw last night.

Gennadiy Golovkin was in attendance last night to see two old foes of his, Canelo Alvarez and Daniel Jacobs, do battle in the main event in Las Vegas, and he appeared on the DAZN post-fight show to talk about the fight and his own upcoming DAZN debut on June 8 against Steve Rolls.

GGG (38-1-1, 34 KO) wasn’t impressed by Canelo-Jacobs.

“Frankly, I was expecting much more. It was just like a sparring match,” Golovkin said through his translator. “It was a little boring. They are both high-level boxers, they should give more to the audience. I didn’t see any emotion. I didn’t see anything special. It was just a good sparring match.”

Golovkin lost a controversial majority decision to Alvarez last September, and said that the loss has not bothered him as much as some people might think.

“Not at all. First of all, deep in my heart, I didn’t feel like I lost it,” he said. “Second, I enjoy my career, I enjoy my family, I enjoy my time and I’m sure there will be a third fight.”

Steve Rolls (19-0, 10 KO), a massive underdog, will be Golovkin’s opponent on June 8 at Madison Square Garden. GGG has just hired a new trainer in Johnathon Banks, and it will be their first outing as a team.

“It will be my first comeback fight. I think we’ll be fighting at a high level,” Golovkin said. “I have a new coach, which I think will be helpful. It will be an interesting, high-level fight.”

Golovkin has high hopes for his pairing with Banks, who has notably worked with Wladimir Klitschko and Cecilia Braekhus.

“There should be a connection between the fighter and the coach. We have a lot of things in common, we have a very strong connection. Johnathon has experience working with well-developed boxers and champions.”
