Fresh off of his unanimous decision win over Daniel Jacobs this past weekend, there’s already questions about where Canelo Alvarez goes from here. In the immediate aftermath of the Jacobs fight it was made known that Canelo has serious interest in becoming the undisputed middleweight titleholder, but promoter Oscar De La Hoya also told RingTV that his fighter has plenty of options to choose from.
“There’s lots of options for him. Callum Smith, Kovalev at 175 [lbs]. He has lots of options. One thing about Canelo is he never shies away from a challenge. Canelo’s wish is to unify all the belts. Canelo has expressed interest in fighting in Wembley Stadium in England [or] Dallas. A trilogy with GGG is also possible.”
Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn obviously loves the thought of getting another one of his fighters in a high profile bout, so that could work out well for Hearn whether Smith or Andrade gets the call. But it would seem more likely that Canelo would target the last remaining middleweight world title before moving up to face someone like Smith, although in the business of boxing you can never be certain how things will pan out.
For now all we know is that Canelo remains on top of the middleweight heap and the world continues to be his oyster. But which fight do you think makes the most sense as next move for the champion?
