WBC heavyweight titleholder Deontay Wilder is set to defend his belt against mandatory challenger Dominic Breazeale on Saturday, May 18, live on Showtime from Brooklyn’s Barclays Center.
Showtime’s All Access cameras have been with the two heavyweights, as Wilder (40-0-1, 39 KO) prepares for the ninth defense of the belt he won in Jan. 2015, and Breazeale (20-1, 18 KO) goes after a world title for the second time, having lost to Anthony Joshua in 2016.
Wilder-Breazeale, of course, is not really the fight anybody wanted to see, and it wasn’t what was expected, either. When Wilder went to a disputed draw with Tyson Fury in December, the WBC ordered a rematch between the two. But Fury instead opted out, signing a contract with Top Rank to fight on ESPN networks, and the WBC instead ordered Wilder to defend against Breazeale, who has been sitting on his mandatory spot since beating Eric Molina in Nov. 2017.
