Meet Ruben Villa, featherweight prospect and ShoBox headliner

The latest Showtime “Day in Camp” special looks at Ruben Villa, who fights on Friday night.

Showtime’s “Day in Camp” series has taken a look at the work behind preparing the likes of Jarrett Hurd, Claressa Shields, Devin Haney, Erickson Lubin, and others, and the latest video goes inside the camp of featherweight prospect Ruben Villa, who headlines this Friday’s edition of ShoBox: The New Generation.

Villa (15-0, 5 KO) made his ShoBox debut in January, shutting out Ruben Cervera over eight rounds in Shreveport, Louisiana, and now has his chance to be the main event on the long-running prospect series, topping the Thompson Boxing card in Corona, California.

Villa, 22, works with head trainer Max Garcia at Robert Garcia’s gym in Riverside, and on Friday he faces Luis Alberto Lopez (17-1, 8 KO) in a 10-round fight. Lopez’s only loss was a split decision to Abraham Montoya in March 2018 in Mexicali.

Friday’s show will also feature a pair of eight-round fights. In one, 21-year-old lightweight Michael Dutchover (12-0, 9 KO) of Texas faces Chile’s Ramon Mascarena Jr (10-0, 5 KO), and in the other, 21-year-old bantamweight Saul Sanchez (11-0, 6 KO) of California will take on once-beaten Mexican Brandon Leon Benitez (14-1, 6 KO).
