Unbeaten Irish middleweight Jason Quigley returns to the Golden Boy airwaves next month, headlining a July 18th Thursday Night Fights event in Indio against Bahamian Olympian Tureano Johnson. The co-feature pits Argentine Rio quarterfinalist Alberto Melian against Leonardo Baez in a 10-rounder.
Now, this series is called “Golden Boy DAZN Thursday Night Fights” and the GBP press release is titled “Jason Quigley faces Tureano Johnson on DAZN on 7/18,” but it will actually stream on RingTV.com, Golden Boy’s Facebook page, and “regional sports networks around the nation.” Good marketing, team.
That aside, Quigley (16-0, 12 KO) vs. Johnson (20-2-1, 14 KO) is an interesting step-up fight. Quigley’s beaten some low- to mid-tier guys like Glen Tapia and Freddy Hernandez, but Johnson’s only defeats were a controversial TKO loss to Curtis Stevens and a stoppage defeat against top-five middleweight Sergiy Derevyanchenko in 2017. Though Johnson’s in a slump at the moment, coming off of the Derevyanchenko loss and a draw against journeyman Francisco Castaneda that ended an 18-month layoff. he’s still a solid gatekeeper sort who should give a clear picture of Quigley’s upside.
