The previously reported welterweight showdown between Jose Benavidez Jr. and Luis Collazo has a time and place: August 17th at Los Angeles’ Banc of California Stadium, headlining a Top Rank on ESPN show. It will be Benavidez’s first appearance since a failed title bid against Terence Crawford last October and Collazo’s fourth bout in the last four years.
I’m with Scott on this one; not a great main event, but a solid matchup. Collazo (39-7, 20 KO) remains a handful for anyone after nearly 20 years as a professional, having defeated Samuel Vargas, Bryant Perrella, and Sammy Vasquez in his last three bouts, while Benavidez (27-1, 18 KO) put up a commendable effort against Crawford.
As has become the modern standard, this card will have some competition, namely the Showtime card headlined by Claressa Shields’ super welterweight title bid against Ivana Habazin. Shields-Habazin clearly has the headliner edge, but we’ll see how their respective undercards develop.
