Seniesa Estrada retained her WBC “silver” junior flyweight title tonight in Hollywood, California, stopping Gretchen Abaniel after four rounds of pretty one-sided action.
Estrada (17-0, 7 KO) got the win when Abaniel (18-11, 6 KO) told her corner after the fourth round that she had nothing more to give in the fight.
It wasn’t, as a result, an outing where we can learn a ton more we didn’t already know about the 26-year-old Estrada, but it’s a good outing and win for her either way.
“I was landing some really hard shots and I had to be careful because her style can make her opponent sloppy,” Estrada said after the fight.
“Right now I want belts, I want world titles, so Yesenia Gomez, let’s make it happen in September,” Estrada added when asked what she wants next. Her rivalry with Marlen Esparza was also brought up, and she added that Esparza “can get it any time.”
Gomez (15-5-3, 6 KO) does hold the WBC junior flyweight title, but there’s also interim titleholder Kenia Enriquez (22-1, 9 KO). Yes, even with a shallow pool of competitive fighters, the WBC basically has three women’s titleholders at 108 pounds.
Azat Hovhannisyan TKO-4 Glenn Porras
Hovhannisyan (17-3, 14 KO) is generally great TV, and here he just worked and worked and worked, demolishing Porras (32-9, 20 KO) pretty much every round until the referee made a very good stoppage in the fourth. Porras was hanging as well as he could, but getting battered. Hovhannisyan, 30, has a sort of deceptive record. He lost his pro debut in 2011 and a fight he shouldn’t have in 2014, but since then he’s only lost to Rey Vargas, and he put it on Ronny Rios a little over a year ago. After the fight he said he wants to face the top guys at 122 — Vargas, Daniel Roman, Emanuel Navarrete, TJ Doheny, etc.
Carlos Caraballo KO-2 Esteban Aquino
Caraballo keeps his perfect record, going to 12-0 (12 KO) with his quick smashing of Aquino (12-7, 7 KO). Aquino came to fight, but he was open for counter shots from the southpaw Caraballo, and Caraballo made him pay. Caraballo is a 24-year-old Puerto Rican prospect at 122 pounds, and one to keep an eye on. He still has to step up the competition in time, but he’s promising.
