Amir Khan’s July 12th fight against India’s Neeraj Goyat is not going to go ahead as planned. ESPN reports that Goyat, 27, was just recently hospitalized after sustaining “severe injuries” following a car accident on his way home from training.
“We are very sad to inform that Neeraj Goyat, who was preparing for his mega fight against Amir Khan, met with a car accident last night that has caused him severe injuries on his head, face and left arm. He is currently in hospital and we wish him a speedy recovery,” Bill Dosanjh, Promoter of the Super Boxing League, said in a statement.
Instead of canceling the entire card, set to take place in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, organizers will now be trying to find Khan a replacement opponent, with an announcement expected to come soon.
Goyat (11-3-2, 2 KOs) was a very popular amateur boxer in India, and even though he hasn’t really done anything as a professional, Khan (33-5, 20 KOs) was still hoping to leverage that popularity into a bounce back win coming off the Terence Crawford debacle. Really, though, Goyat was overmatched from the conception of this fight, so I doubt many fans will be broken up over it falling apart.
Still, though, we certainly wish no harm on Goyat. BLH wishes him a full and speedy recovery.
