Claudio Marrero outpointed Eduardo Ramirez in tonight’s Showtime opener from Houston, winning by unanimous decision in a WBA featherweight eliminator.
Marrero (24-3, 17 KO) won on scores of 115-113, 116-112, and 118-110. Bad Left Hook scored the fight 115-113 for Marrero, while Showtime’s Steve Farhood scored it 116-112 for Marrero.
Ramirez (22-2-3, 9 KO) started OK enough, but Marrero went on a good run in the middle rounds, particularly the fourth through sixth frames, where he built some momentum and got a lead in the fight. From there things went back-and-forth a bit, but Marrero did enough to pick up a pivotal victory.
The WBA “super world” champion at 126 is Leo Santa Cruz, while Can Xu holds the “world” title. Ramirez was designated as holding the “gold” title coming into this fight, which is what it is or whatever.
