Jermell Charlo to face Jorge Cota on June 23 FOX show

With Tony Harrison out of his scheduled June 23 FOX rematch with Jermell Charlo, Mexico’s Jorge Cota is officially in to face Charlo on short notice, and the show will go on at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.

Cota (28-3, 25 KO) is a 31-year-old vet with some pop whose biggest win probably came back in 2011, when he briefly denied Yori Boy Campas a 100th career win by stopping the then-40-year-old Campas in the eighth round. (Campas would eventually get win No. 100 and then seven more, for what it’s worth.)

That win over Campas got the previously-untested Cota a shot against Marco Antonio Rubio in June 2012, and Rubio stopped Cota in seven. Since then, Cota’s been a club fighter for the most part, getting an occasional step-up sort of fight. He beat Yudel Jhonson — once considered a prospect — in 2015, and then followed that up a year and a half later with a TKO-4 loss to Erickson Lubin. Most recently, he had a four-fight win streak snapped via split decision on April 20, losing to Jeison Rosario on the Garcia-Granados card.

Cota doesn’t really figure to be a threat to Charlo (31-1, 15 KO), but Charlo was amped up for a world title rematch against Harrison (28-2, 21 KO), and he’ll have to be careful not to let the wind go out of his sails too much. Normally I wouldn’t much bother to say that, but upsets are flying right now, so it has to be noted.

The card will also still feature Guillermo Rigondeaux vs Julio Ceja in a WBC 122-pound eliminator.
