Former two-weight champion Carl Frampton (26-2, 15 KOs) has officially been scheduled to take on Emmanuel Dominguez (26-8-2, 18 KOs) for an August 10th fight airing on ESPN+, the first fight of his co-promotional deal with Top Rank. The promotional company made the formal announcement today.
The two fighters will meet in a 10-round featherweight contest which will serve as the main event at the Liacouras Center at Temple University.
Frampton, 32, will be looking to get back into the win column here after dropping a unanimous decision to Josh Warrington last December, but will be facing a fighter who has some real physical advantages over him.
“Dominguez is a tall, young, hungry featherweight, so I’ll need to be on my game,” the 5-foot-4 Frampton said of his 5-9 opponent. “The premise of an Oscar Valdez fight is dangling in front of me, so I want to go out and show the world that I’ve still got what it takes to be a world champion.
”Winning is always the most important thing, but I want to do it in style. It’s great to be boxing stateside again, and Philly, in particular, has so much boxing history. I won’t disappoint.”
Dominguez, 25, fights out of Mexico and has won two straight fights against low-level opposition since getting stopped by Jordan Gill this past March. Dominguez’s record is mighty thin, though, so the expectation will be that Frampton — although past his prime — should still be too good to come up short in this contest. Dominguez still says he’s no steppingstone, however, and plans on ruining Frampton’s thoughts of facing Oscar Valdez next.
