Golden Boy promoter Oscar De La Hoya admits that he doesn’t know when we’re likely to see a third fight between Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin, but does say he fully expects them to fight again.
“I strongly feel that we will see a third fight. I strongly feel that being the warrior that Canelo is, and obviously ‘GGG’ being willing to fight Canelo, again I think the demand is there from the fans,” De La Hoya said. “I don’t know how soon we’ll see it, but I think eventually we will.”
Golovkin is thought to have aligned himself with DAZN largely in part to capitalize on the massive success of his first two fights with Canelo, but since that signing Canelo hasn’t been particularly inclined to green light on another Golovkin fight, something Golden Boy president Eric Gomez says is completely up to him.
“It’s up to [Alvarez]. He has a win over [Golovkin] and it’s totally up to him if he wants to do it or not,’’ Gomez said. “He has said in the past that if that’s the fight that the fans really want, he’ll do it. He’s done it before, but it’s totally at his discretion, whenever he wants to do it.”
At this point Canelo is expected to fight again before the year is out, with Golden Boy still looking at a few possible opponents. That said, there’s been a lot of rumored tension surrounding Canelo’s current relationship with Golden Boy, and there’s probably a lot to iron out in that respect if the two sides are to continue forging a working relationship.
