Yesterday former unified middleweight world champion Gennady Golovkin held a kick-off press conference in New York City with Sergiy Derevyanchenko to announce their October 5th title fight at Madison Square Garden. The two middleweights will contend for the vacant IBF title, recently stripped off Canelo Alvarez.

After all the promoters, trainers, etc., got their turn at the microphone, the fighters got a chance to share a few words, with Derevyanchenko up first.

“I’m really excited and happy to be at Madison Square Garden,” Derevyanchenko said through a translator. “I know exactly who I’m getting in the ring with, he is a former middleweight champion of the world, one of the best fighters in the world, but his time is coming to an end and I want to be the one that makes that time come to an end.”

Golovkin would eventually get his turn at the podium and had this to say about the upcoming fight.

“I am so excited. Beautiful present...Of course I am very excited right now because I understand situation. Look, right now I work with the best people from boxing, I have the best opponent, Sergiy Derevyanchenko. I known him a long time ago, he’s a real very good fight. I understand my situation, this is not a game. This is real fight.”
