Conlan vs Ruiz: Live results and discussion

Michael Conlan returns in a Belfast homecoming today on ESPN+.

Scott Christ is the managing editor of Bad Left Hook and has been covering boxing for SB Nation since 2006.

Today at 3 pm ET from Belfast, Michael Conlan returns home for a main event matchup with Argentina’s Diego Alberto Ruiz, streaming live on ESPN+ in the US and airing on BT Sport in the UK.

Conlan, 27, is a top prospect at 126 pounds and hoping to be an emerging contender, though he hasn’t really stepped up the competition yet, even to the level of fellow Top Rank rising featherweight Shakur Stevenson, despite being five years older than his American counterpart.

Conlan was supposed to face amateur rival Vladimir Nikitin today, but Nikitin got hurt so Ruiz, 25, has stepped in for what actually may be a tougher matchup when all is said and done.

The show will also feature a fight between British welterweight titleholder Chris Jenkins and Paddy Gallagher, with the vacant Commonwealth title also at stake.

Here’s the run order:

Main Card (ESPN+, 3:00 pm ET)

  • Padraig McCrory (8-0, 3 KO) vs Steve Collins Jr (14-2-1, 4 KO), super middleweights, 8 rounds
  • Sean McComb (7-0, 4 KO) vs Renald Garrido (24-24-3, 6 KO), junior welterweights, 8 rounds
  • Luke Keeler (16-2-1, 5 KO) vs Luis Arias (18-1-1, 9 KO), middleweights, 10 rounds
  • Paddy Gallagher (16-5, 10 KO) vs Chris Jenkins (21-3-2, 8 KO), welterweights, 12 rounds
  • Michael Conlan (11-0, 6 KO) vs Diego Alberto Ruiz (21-2, 10 KO), featherweights, 10 rounds
