Sebastian Fundora Split Draw Jamontay Clark (98-92, 94-96, 95-95)
Frank Sanchez RTD-4 Victor Bisbal
Premier Boxing Champions is back on FOX tonight with a borderline absurd main event, as Erislandy Lara will face Canelo Alvarez’s brother Ramon for the vacant WBA “world” junior middleweight title.
Well, Lara can win the title. Alvarez cannot, as he badly missed weight on Friday, which is about what everyone gets with this one.
Patrick L. Stumberg will be on the call this evening, with the fights starting at 8 pm ET.
Lara, 36, hasn’t won a fight since Oct. 2017, when he outpointed Terrell Gausha in a dull bout from Brooklyn, going 0-1-1 in his last two. But the good news is that those last two fights have been quite good — a 2018 Fight of the Year loss to Jarrett Hurd, and an entertaining draw in March of this year with Brian Castano.
Lara may not be what he’s been in the past, but he’s still a top contender and likely notably better than Alvarez, 33, who was beaten badly by a washed Brandon Rios in Nov. 2018 and last fought in April, winning a split decision over journeyman Jose Carlos Paz in Mexico.
The undercard will feature a more interesting 154-pound fight, as super tall prospect Sebastian Fundora takes on Jamontay Clark, plus Cuban heavyweight Frank Sanchez against Victor Bisbal.
