ESPN+, 6:30 pm ET, Frampton-Dominguez prelims. Tune in early if you want to see the pro debut of two-time, two-weight Olympic gold medalist Robeisy Ramirez, a 25-year-old Cuban blue chip featherweight and someone I was huge on in both London and Rio. He was truly outstanding. Sonny Conto and Jeremy Adorno, among others, will also be in action. BLH will have shadow live coverage.
DAZN, 7:00 pm ET, Vergil Ortiz Jr vs Antonio Orozco, Joshua Franco vs Oscar Negrete III. Ortiz is one of the most exciting young prospects in the sport today, a wicked puncher with skills at 140/147. Orozco, now 31, was a long-simmering prospect who had some weight issues at 140 and eventually got a title shot, losing to Jose Ramirez last year. He’s a good step for Ortiz here, not without risk. Franco and Negrete are bantamweight rivals who have had two really good fights that went largely overlooked because they weren’t featured on big shows or anything, so it’s nice to see them get a feature slot on a DAZN card. BLH will have live coverage.
ESPN+, 10:00 pm ET, Jason Sosa vs Haskell Lydell Rhodes, Edgar Berlanga vs Gregory Trenel. This wasn’t a very good show when the main event was Carl Frampton vs Emmanuel Dominguez, and it’s about Telemundo-level now. I mean the Frampton injury is freaky stuff, it’s nobody’s fault (well, it’s somebody’s, but certainly not Frampton’s). The main event is a fringe contender against a busted prospect, and the co-feature does have Berlanga, a legit prospect with an exciting style. So we’ll have an eye on it, but our focus is on the DAZN show. BLH will have shadow live coverage.
