The November 2nd Top Rank show in Carson, headlined by Miguel Berchelt vs. Jason Sosa, is fixing to become a title doubleheader. ESPN reports that a co-main event between IBF super flyweight champion Jerwin Ancajas and #14 contender Jonathan Rodriguez is “in the works.”
The 24-year-old Rodriguez’s (21-1, 15 KO) record is empty outside of his most recent win, a June TKO of former title challenger Felipe Orucuta that led to “Gallito” collapsing 9in the ring and subsequently undergoing brain surgery. He’s also not far removed from a split decision loss to 5-2-1 Jose Martin Estrada Garcia. Really not a great look for Ancajas (31-1-2, 21 KO) when two of the other super flyweight champs are looking to unify and the other, Kazuto Ioka, just fought Donnie Nietes and Aston Palicte back-to-back.
Then again, “Pretty Boy” might still be playing it safe after barely escaping Alex Santiago last year. He took out some decent challengers after beating McJoe Arroyo for the belt, including a one-sided thrashing of Jamie Conlan but between that draw and the seemingly inevitable Kal Yafai unification dissolving, he hasn’t exactly lit the world on fire lately.
At least Berchelt-Sosa’s a guaranteed firefight.
