As expected, WBC middleweight champion Jermall Charlo’s next title defense will come against former super welterweight title challenger Dennis Hogan, whom he’ll reportedly face on December 7th in a Showtime main event. The card will “likely” take place at Barclays Center, which has hosted three of Charlo’s last four fights.
Said date would theoretically place the card in conflict with Ruiz-Joshua II, but I’m guessing time zones will take care of any overlap.
Hogan (28-2-1, 7 KO) absolutely deserved another shot at a world title after a highly controversial loss to Jaime Munguia in April. In that sense, I’m happy for him. Still not a compelling matchup, though; even though Charlo (29-0, 21 KO) has been less impressive lately, edging out Matt Korobov and failing to stop Brandon Adams in his two title defenses, it’s hard to get interested in this when Hogan’s last middleweight fight came in 2014.
One would think that a Charlo double bill would be on the docket, but Jermell implied via Instagram that he was set to rematch Tony Harrison on December 21st. We’ll keep you appraised as more concrete details emerge.
