Shields vs Habazin: Live streaming results, round by round and discussion

Claressa Shields goes for titles in a third weight class in tonight’s main event against Ivana Habazin.

Round By Round

Claressa Shields vs Ivana Habazin

Round 1: Habazin comes out and misses on two punches as Shields lays back on the ropes immediately. Shields tries to counter weith a jab but doesn’t land it clean. Right hand from Habazin glances upstairs. Two big shots come from Shields but she doesn’t make solid contact either. Shields tries to work her jab and then slips a couple shots from Habazin. Left from Shields lands to the body. Close round but I’ll give the edge to Shields. Shields 10-9.

Round 2: Shields tries to come out with a couple of hooks and ends up in a clinch right after. Counter left to the body makes contact for Shields, who then throws a few jabs upstairs that occupies Habazin. Several jabs come from Shields but they don’t land clean although they have Habazin moving backwards. Shields misses on a big right hand upstairs. Shields 10-9, 20-18.

Round 3: Both fighters are firing right away but neither land much anything clean. Referee warns both fighters about wrestling a little too much in the clinch. Left to the body lands well for Shields. Shields goes back to her jab that keeps Habazin on the defensive. Shields go back down to the body with a a left hook. More power shots come from Shields as Habazin tries her best to defend herself by holding. Shields 10-9.

Round 4: Habazin didn’t have the best body language between rounds. Shields tries to work her jab which is keeping Habazin at a distance. Now Shields presses forward with a few jabs that don’t land but have Habazin retreating. Right hand makes partial contact for Habazin upstairs this time. Shields tries to pour it on Habazin but she’s not landing many clean punches. Shields 10-9, 40-36.

Round 5: Habazin feints a jab and Shields throws a few of hers. Right hand lands to the body for Shields at the end of a series of jabs upstairs. Habazin throws a half-hearted jab to the body. Double jab from Shields falls short. Habazin comes forward and puts Shields in the corner but smothers herself so she can’t land anything on Shields. now Shields tries to unload on Habazin but Habazin grabs hold to stop the action. Shields 10-9.

Round 6: Shields comes out with a flurry of punches that don’t all land clean but are clearly overwhelming Habazin to the point where’s she almost purely defensive. Shields steps forward and lands a hard left body shot that stuns Hazabin who is trying to catch her breath. Shields comes forward and Hazabin takes a knee. Habazin gets up and looks to smother so she can find time to regroup. Right to the body lands for Shields. Shields 10-8, 60-53.

Round 7: Double jab from Shields doesn’t find the target. Habazin tries and falls short on a jab to the body. Habazin doing a good job of ducking and holding to keep Shields from overwhelming her with volumes of punches. Now Habazin takes a shot from Shields as Shields throws a flurry of shots that mostly don’t land well. Shields 10-9.

Round 8: Looks like Habazin has an mark under her eye now. Habazin tries to jab to the body but with no real authority. Shields throws a leaping jab. Habazin lands a left to the body and then leans on Shields against the opes. Short left makes a little contact for Habazin on the inside. Shields throws another combination and the referee gives Habazin a stern warning for something. Shields throws more punches to end the round. Shields 10-9, 80-71.

Round 9: Shields goes to the ropes right away but then comes off and lands a nice right hand to the body but can’t follow it up before getting tied up. Double jab comes from Shields as Habazin wings two wild hooks. Shields comes forward and throws punches as Habazin tries to duck and hold. Jab comes from Habazin but she can’t land the big hook to end the round. Shields 10-9.

Round 10: Last round. Double jab comes from Shields as Habazin tries to duck and push under Shields’ attack to press her along the ropes. Habazin is smothering Shields and herself along the ropes so neither fighter can’t get leverage on their shots. Shields turns off the ropes and looks to unload but Habazin is right in her chest to keep her from getting off. Now Habazin gets Shields back on the ropes but can’t land much of anything of significance. Shields 10-9, 100-89.

Jaron Ennis vs Bakhtiyar Eyubov

Round 1: Check left hook comes right away for Ennis, who then spins Eyubov off who tries to walk right into Ennis’ chest. Double left to the bodyl ands for Ennis, followed by another couple of follow up punches. Hard left to the body lands for Ennis as he turns to the southpaw stance. Hard combination of punches land clean for Ennis. Another body shot lands well down to the body for Ennis. More hard shots from Ennis put Eyubov down! Eyubov gets up but this is looking ugly early. Clean uppercut lands for Ennis that stuns Eyubov and puts him down again just moments later! Eyubov gets up once more but eats another uppercut right away! More power shots come from Ennis as he puts a beating on Eyubov in the opening round. Ennis 10-7.

Round 2: More left hands land for Ennis from the southpaw stance, followed by a clean left uppercut square on the chin. Eyubov somehow takes the shot and continues to try to come forward but he’s not getting anything done. Ennis seems to be taking some time to catch his breath after the blistering pace he set while being defensively responsible. Eyubov tries to hook to the body but Ennis is defending well. Now Eyubov lands a left hook upstairs but Ennis pushes Eyubov back and lands a few clean hard shots in succession. Ennis 10-9, 20-16.

Round 3: Eyubov comes out aggressively but can’t land anything clean before getting touched by Ennis to the body and head. Right hook from the southpaw stance lands clean for Ennis, who follows it up with a short combination. Two body shots land down to the body, then two more as Eyubov tries to loop some overhand hooks. Now Ennis turns orthodox and lands a clean right hook. Clean left to the liver lands well for Ennis. More clean shots land for Ennis upstairs now. Ennis 10-9.

Round 4: It’s looks like Eyubov is only getting this last round to turn things around before they pull the plug on him. Clean hooks clip Eyubov upstairs. Ennis throws a short combination as Eyubov tries his best to cover up but the referee decides he’s seen enough and stops the fight right here. Eyubov doesn’t like it. Ennis TKO-4.

Alicia Napoleon-Espinosa vs Elin Cederroos

Round 1: Napleon lands a jab to the body and looks to follow it up with one upstairs right away. Cederroos takes a step back and lands a long jab of her own, then a nice straight right hand. Napleon feints and reaches with a jab upstairs. Two long punches make contact for Cederroos. Jab lands for Napoleon this time that backs Cederroos up Cederroos comes back and lands good shots off the ropes. Right hand lands upstairs for Napoleon as she flurries to end the round. Napoleon-Espinosa 10-9.

Round 2: Both fighters trade jabs at center ring but Napoleon is able to come forward and get the taller Cederroos on the retreat a little. Left to the body misses for Napoleon, who then walks into a right hand from Cederroos. Double jab misses upstairs for Napoleon. Right hand makes partial contact for Cederroos this time, but then lands a better right hand this time around. TWO HARD SHOTS FROM CEDERROOS SENDS NAPOLEON-ESPINOSA CRUMBLING INTO THE ROPES! Cederroos 10-8, 19-18.

Round 3: Cederroos comes out throwing long left and right hands as she tries to follow up, knowing she can hurt Napoleon. Right hand from Napoleon just barely misses upstairs. Cederroos gets in a clean jab followed by a good body shot by Cederroos. Big overhand right from Napoleon misses upstairs. Short combination from Cederroos has mixed success. Cederroos 10-9.

Round 4: Jab to the body comes from Napoleon, when tries for another one, then a third and fourth. Cederroos lands a straight right hand upstairs. Another two clean shots land clean for Cederroos and Napoleon was to rumble with her. Clean jab lands for Cederroos who is pressuring Napoleon around the ring. Napoleon goes downstairs with a left hand and then lands a right upstairs, followed by another. I like the was Napoleon fought back to end that round. Napoleon-Espinoza, 10-9, 37-38.

Round 5: Jab comes from Cederroos. Napoleon tries to reach in on a jab but it falls short and Cederroos gets in a right hand in exchange. Cederroos is using her length pretty well in this round and is able to pick off Napoleon with some shots as she tries to close the distance. Cederroos rolls a right hand from Napoleon upstairs. Right hand lands for Cederroos to end the round. Cederroos 10-9.

Round 6: Napoleon comes out with a quick jab to the body. A few more punches from Napoleon fall short. Now Napoleon finds the range a little better. Cederroos looks to establish her own offense now and lands a few left hands at ranges as she stands at center ring. Right hand from Cederroos lands clean upstairs. Counter right hand lands for Cederroos again. Cederroos continues to pick off Napoleon for large portions of this fight. Counter right hand lands well for Napoleon but I don’t thinks it’s enough. Cederroos 10-9, 58-55.

Round 7: Napoleon reaches on a few punches and makes contact after a while of keeping her hands moving. Left to the body lands for Napoleon. Right hand from Napoleon lands upstairs. Cederroos is losing a little focus it seems and her timing isn’t quite as sharp as it has been. Napoleon lands a left hand to end the round. Napoleon-Espinosa 10-9.

Round 8: Both fighters trade shots and both make some contact. Cederroos is throwing more punches to start this round and then takes a step back as she tries to land a straight right which lands clean. Cederroos gets in another clean shot that stuns Napoleon momentarily. Cederroos comes forward but Napoleon is throwing back with several hard right hands upstairs over and over again! I still think Cederroos takes the round. Cederroos 10-9, 77-74.

Round 9: Right hand to the body makes a little contact for Napoleon. Two more body shots from Napoleon fall short. Jab upstairs makes partial contact for Cederroos as Napoleon steps forward. Left makes contact upstairs for Cederroos, followed by a right hand. Napoleon has a cut over her right eye now at the end of the round. Cederroos 10-9.

Round 10: Last round. Fighters touch gloves. Cederroos throws a short combination that doesn’t have much power behind it. Jab lands for Napoleon as she tries to force her way into punching range. Uppercut lands clean for Cederroos to the chin! Now Cederroos is bleeding from her nose pretty badly. Napoleon literally smells blood now and tries to walk forward and throw more punches as Cederroos throws back with straight punches. Napoleon-Espinosa 10-9. I’ve got it scored for Cederroos, 96-93.


Tonight at 9 pm ET on Showtime from Atlantic City, our first big card of 2020 hits the airwaves, with Claressa Shields facing Ivana Habazin in the main event for a pair of vacant 154-pound titles.

Wil Esco will be on the round-by-round call for all three fights this evening.

Shields has won titles at super middleweight and middleweight, in that order, and is moving down again seeking more belts. Habazin is a big underdog here, but she’s talked a big game, so there’s that.

The co-feature will see top welterweight prospect Jaron “Boots” Ennis return in a 10-round fight against Bakhtiyar Eyubov, and in the opener, Alicia Napoleon-Espinosa and Elin Cederroos square off in a super middleweight unification bout with the WBA and IBF titles at stake.
